Day 2  Kathmandu – Pashupatinath, Boudhanath, Kathmandu Durbar Square, Swayambunath, Nepal Musuem

This is a full-day tour of the main sites of Kathmandu, including Boudhanath (World Heritage Site), Pashupatinath Temple (World Heritage Site), Kathmandu Durbar Square(World Heritage Site), Swayambunath (World Heritage Site), and National Museum of Nepal.

Pashupatinath Temple is a pagoda-style Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Pashupatinath is the oldest Hindu temple in Nepal, with its origins dating back to around 400 B.C.

Boudhanath is a massive Buddhist stupa that dates back to the 5th or 6th century A.D. The Boudhanath stupa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is where thousands of pilgrims make a ritual circumnavigation of the massive dome. The stupa is surrounded by many monasteries and other supporting religious architecture.

Kathmandu Durbar Square is one of three royal palace squares in the Kathmandu Valley, and the royal residence for Nepalese rulers until the 19th century. This was also the site for important ceremonies such as the coronation of Nepalese monarchs for centuries. One interesting feature at the south end of Kathmandu Durbar Square is the Kumari Chowk – a gilded cage that holds the Kumari (living goddess), a young girl chosen through an ancient and mystical selection process to become the human incarnation of the Hindu mother goddess, Durga. Kumari is worshipped during religious festivals.

Swayambhunath Temple is also known as the Monkey Temple due to the swarms of monkeys that inhabit the area. The Buddhist stupa at Swayambhunath is at least 1,500 years old and may be as many as 2,000 years old. It has a gilded spire and huge white dome located under thousands of multicolored prayer flags, with the spire having four faces of the Buddha looking out in all 4 directions.

The National Museum of Nepal is established in 1928 as an arsenal museum. It is housed in a historical building built by General Bhimsen Thapa in the early 19th century. It also named Chhauni Silkhana, literally meaning ‘the stone house of arms and ammunitions. Chhauni museum has wonderful historical collections and is divided into three main historical collections, each housed in a separate building.

After the visits, we will take you back to your hotel for the night.

From Patan we will travel on to Bhaktapur Durbar Square, another ancient royal palace complex located about 13 kilometers (8 miles) east of Kathmandu. Some of the main attractions here include the 55-Window Palace, the Statue of King Bhupatintra Malla, Nyatapola Temple (Temple of the 5 Basic Elements), the Bhairavanath Temple and the Golden Gate.
